How to paint real & fake wood furniture black?

June 17th, 2009 | Posted in Wicker   Comments Off
luvnthenight asked:

I have a very old dresser which is real wood, and a headboard which I think is some sort of fake wood (its smooth on it’s surface) black to match each other. I am thinking something semi-gloss or glossy. I don’t want things to stick to it as the dresser has my TV on top of it, and the headboard is sort of like a bookshelf, so if non-glossy would be better I would go for that too. I think the old dresser is stained and is kind of “soft” when I scratch it with my nail. I’m looking for suggestions on prep and type of paint to use, and as easy a process as possible. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just look put together. Thanks!

Also, I have a papasan (round) chair that I might eventually paint to match. Would spray paint be my best bet for the frame? I believe it is a sort of wicker.

I am having a wedding by the beach and saw a picture of a reception with wicker furniture. Very casual, but pretty. The wedding is in san diego and I have know idea if it’s evan possible to rent something like that for an event. I looked in wedding rental sites and furniture rentals and didn’t see anything…Is there anyone who knows of a patio rental place???

My husband keeps throwing my stuff out - I’m tired of being mad?

May 19th, 2009 | Posted in Wicker   Comments Off
Eve asked:

How can I stop getting mad at my husband?
My husband has done so many things that have made me mad over the last ten years that almost anything can trigger a memory that makes me get mad all over again. Of course he always had a reason that justified it to him, so he thinks I am crazy.
There are so many things - just saw an ad for a lawn game I used to play which reminded me how he got rid of my nice croquet set, lawn tennis, bocci ball, wicker furniture, hammock, laundry line, cut down trees, mowed flower beds, and that’s just the yard.
When I was in the hospital fighting leukemia, he refused to bring the baby because it was too hard. I could have died without seeing my 8 month old! He gave away all the baby stuff- furniture and clothes I was saving for a second child without telling me.
He threw out my bookcases, well you get the idea.
I don’t throw things of his out.
I want to get away but my daughter is against it, so I would be broke, sick and by myself. Yes, I am in therapy.

Decorating my front porch for summer?

May 14th, 2009 | Posted in Wicker   Comments Off
Tina asked:

I have a 12ft. by 12ft. front porch with pillars on the front. I have always decorated it the same every year with wicker chairs, table , and decorate with plants. Very warm and inviting. However no one ever sits out there, so I’d like to use the furniture in my backyard seating area. Any ideas how to make it warm and inviting wihtout furniture?

What should I use to cover deck trellis to shield from rain/debris?

April 30th, 2009 | Posted in Wicker   Comments Off
Online Biz asked:

Hi,

We have a large deck that we are refinishing and about a 12′ x 10′ section of the deck has a trellis covering it. The trellis simply consists of 4 posts and horizontal slats, so it is mostly open. We have recently purchased some expensive outdoor wicker furniture and a table with a propane fire pit…so I would like to shield this area from rain and falling leaves, helicopters, etc from the huge tree above it…as it would be our only “covered” area.

My problem is that i’m not sure what to use…I don’t want it to be ugly (tarp), but I also want it to be effective. I found a sunshade here: http://www.kingcanopy.com/product/pc-20011-12 . I’m thinking that since the big tree blocks a good deal of rain it might do the trick. Anyone have experience with how much water they repel? Any other suggestions as to what i should go with here?

Thanks
John

Jessie

Painting wicker furniture advice is needed?

April 7th, 2009 | Posted in Wicker   Comments Off
BMD asked:

We have natural looking wicker furniture that we want to paint black. Need advice.

Do we need to prime it first?
Should we use oil or latex based?
Should we use any kind of cleaner/varnish remover b-4 we paint?

My husband seems to think we need to first use a remover to get old varnish off but it’s so weathered that I know that it will be easy to paint, and he thinks we need oil based paint. I am trying to explain to him that oil based is a nightmare and that we really don’t even need to prime since it’s natural and we are taking it to black. I’m surprised of his lack of knowledge about painting b/c the REASON for priming is to make sure that your have true color. Painting over red with primer enables a “clean slate” per sey, but paintin gover natural with black is sort of like a clean slate.

Anyway, this is turnign into a nighmare. I almost just want to sell the wicker furniture on ebay and buy NEW. This project could end up costing us our marrige (ha-ha).

Help

Natalie
